CONTRACT APPROVED AT CORNING

The third vote in the past four weeks produced a new contract Thursday between the union and management at Corning Inc.'s glass works plant in Christiansburg.

The vote was 88-16 in favor of the agreement.

Union President Mark Stevers on Wednesday night confirmed the approval of the contract but declined to comment on its specifics. The company planned to release a prepared statement today, he said.

John Yearick, Corning's personnel director, also confirmed the results of the vote and said the company's management was working with the union on the statement.

The rank and file voted on a new contract twice in May, both times rejecting management's offer. A contract deadline was set for July 31.

Corning employs just under 200 workers, and the average salary is about $30,000. The plant makes ceramic parts used in catalytic converters.
