THIS COULD BE STUFFY IN SOMEONE ELSE'S HANDS

Susan J. Douglas would be adelight to sit by at a dinner party. She's bright, funny, highly verbal, and if her enthusiasm sometimes carries her into the realm of silliness, well, it's a small price for the entertainment she provides.

A professor of media and American studies at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, Douglas more than anything is a child of the '50s with a killer grasp of the cultural totems that shapoed us, her contemporaries, in ways we'll never know.
