BRENDLE'S INC.

Brendle's Inc., Elkin, N.C.-based retailer, reported net earnings of $24.8 million for the three months ended April 30, compared with a loss of $4.6 million for the comparable quarter last year. The $24.8 million included a $28.6 million extraordinary income item for debt forgiveness, the result of the company's reorganization and emergence from bankruptcy protection. Revenues were $25.9 million from operating 30 stores, compared with $33.4 million from operating 43 stores in the year-ago period. Sales for the 30 stores open both years increased 5.8 percent.
