GOLFERS READY FOR SUB-PAR DAY

Par is expected to take a beating today when the 21st Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame men's tournament starts at Ole Monterey.

Although it has rained some the past two days, Ole Monterey's 6,779-yard, par-71 layout figures to play very short with literally no rough in today's first round.

Low scores at Ole Monterey will be nothing new. In the tournament's first 20 years, 57 of the tournament's 111 sub-par rounds have been recorded on the trouble-free northeast Roanoke course.

The 54-hole tournament continues Saturday at Botetourt Country Club and winds up Sunday at Water's Edge Country Club in Penhook.

Hanging Rock's Bobby Penn, who has won the individual title the past two years, won't get a shot at a record-setting three-peat. Penn has withdrawn from the tournament due to scheduling conficts.

Scott Atkins, Hanging Rock's first alternate, will play in Penn's place for two days. Second alternate Jim Paxton will play the third day.

With Penn missing, 1989 champion Mike Smith of Roanoke Country Club becomes the instant favorite. Smith finished fourth in a strong field last weekend at the Kenridge Invitional in Charlottesville.

nTom Johnston, who coached the Virginia men's tennis team on an interim basis this spring, has been named head coach of the Cavaliers. He has been an assistant with the men's and women's teams since 1991.

nFormer Virginia lacrosse standouts Cherie Greer and Kelly Daddona will play for the South squad in the North-South Senior women's game today at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Greer and former UVa standouts Kristen Aceto, Bonnie Rosen and Robin Nye have been named to the U.S. Elite squad.

nAssistant golf pro Chip Sullivan from Hanging Rock in Salem shot 71 on Thursday at The Crossings in Richmond and qualified for the Nike Dominion Open next week at the Dominion Golf Club in Richmond.

nNick Molloy of Roanoke was ousted Thursday from the 34th annual Central Virginia Invitational Tennis Tournament in Lynchburg. Molloy beat David Lemair of Fairfax 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round, then lost to top-seeded Roland Thornquist of Chapel Hill, N.C. 6-0, 6-0.
