BULLS MAKE HRS COUNT, BEAT BUCS

Durham's home runs didn't beat the Salem Buccaneers on Friday night.

The men on base did.

"There's a difference," said Trent Jewett, Salem's manager.

Durham drove three homers out of hitter-friendly Municipal Field - as did Salem. Whereas the Bucs netted only three runs from those round-trippers, the Bulls got six runs on two swings of the bat as Tom Waldrop and Adrian Garcia each clubbed three-run shots to power the Bulls to a 9-4 victory before 904 damp, chilly fans.

Those two homers provided the mortal wounds to Salem (28-33), which lost its third consecutive game following a four-game winning streak.

Salem stayed two games behind first-place Winston-Salem in the Carolina League's Southern Division. The Spirits lost 3-2 at Wilmington in 11 innings. The Bucs are a game behind second-place Kinston, which was rained out at Lynchburg. Eight games remain in the first half of Salem's season.

"Whoever gets hot in the end will win this thing," said the Bucs' Jake Austin.

Austin hit a pair of home runs for Salem, NEXT UP: Salem left-hander Sean Lawrence (4-1, 2.78 ERA) vs. Durham left-hander Darrell May (1-2, 4.09) at Municipal Field. Game time is 7 p.m. Ticket prices: $5 (box); $4 (reserved); $3 (general admission); $1 off for children 12 and younger and senior citizens. including a solo shot in the first to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead.

Salem missed a chance to do more damage in the opening inning when it left the bases full against Durham starter Jamie Arnold, who gave up three hits, walked one and watched shortstop Nelson Paulino boot a grounder.

Arnold (5-4) fanned Jon Farrell with the sacks full, then proceeded to scatter five hits through the next 6 innings.

"It's a big boost to a pitcher when he gets into trouble, then gets out of it with only one run," Jewett said.

One run looked like enough for Salem starter Matt Chamberlain, but with two out and a runner on in the fourth, Raymond Nunez singled for the Bulls on a hit-and-run play. Waldrop then ripped a curveball over the center-field wall to give Durham (24-36) a 3-1 lead.

Chance Sanford led off the Salem fifth with a homer to right. One batter later, Austin slammed his 10th homer of the year, a long drive over the right-field wall that tied it at 3.

Chamberlain (2-8) gave up back-to-back doubles to Juan Williams and Nunez to make it 4-3, then was lifted after walking Waldrop. Garcia greeted reliever Rich Townsend with a three-run homer to left-center to make it 7-3.
