ETC. UVA'S GREER REAPS LACROSSE AWARD

Cherie Greer became the third Virginia women's lacrosse player in four years to be named a national player of the year when she was named the nation's best defensive player Friday. Greer joins UVa's Robin Nye (1991 defensive player of the year) and Jenny Slingluff ('92 offensive player of the year) as Cavalier honorees. Maryland's Betsy Elder was this year's offensive player of the year.

James Jones of Bedford and Nelson Prillaman of Collinsville advanced in the Central Virginia Invitational Tennis Tournament Friday in Lynchburg. In the men's 45 bracket, Jones beat Roanoke's John Lipscomb 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. In the men's 35, Prillaman advanced when Mark Sarver of Bluefield, W.Va. withdrew. In other men's 45 matches, Hillsville's Tom Barbee and Blacksburg's Lu Merritt lost.

Chip Sullivan of Roanoke won the Waynesboro Pro-Am golf tournament held Friday at Waynesboro Country Club, shooting a 6-under 66. Charlottesville's Rob McNamara was second at 68. Mark Fry of Roanoke shot a 70.
