CYCLIST, 60, RESUMES CROSS-COUNTRY TRIP FOR HABITAT

BO TURNER resumes his coast-to-coast bicycle trip from Christiansburg on Wednesday to benefit Habitat for Humanity International, the ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Last summer, Turner - who turned 60 in February - cycled from Yorktown to Christiansburg last summer. He hopes to complete the trip to Astoria, Ore., this summer.

"I got a flat just as I was coming into Christiansburg," Turner recounted this week from his home in Helen, Ga. A retired teacher, Turner is the pastor of a Baptist church in Tallulah Falls, Ga. He's been cycling seriously for about five years.

Before he leaves the New River Valley, Turner will speak Tuesday at 7 p.m. at a groundbreaking for a Habitat house going up on Shaffer Drive in Christiansburg.

Turner is taking pledges from individuals and churches to benefit Habitat for Humanity, and he's also asking folks to ride along. One man already has pledged $4,500, or $1 a mile, he said.

Turner plans to follow the Bikecentennial TransAmerica Trail on his 4,500 mile trek through the Midwest and over the Rockies. Along the way, he'll tell the Habitat story to church groups.

Area Presbyterians will join forces with Habitat to build the new home in Christiansburg working on weekends. Volunteers are being sought at all skill levels to form work groups. The lot is set to be cleared today, and work on the four-bedroom home then begins in earnest. It's scheduled to be done in late October.

Cooperating congregations include churches in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Dublin, Fairlawn Narrows, Belspring, Pearisburg, Pulaski and the Roanoke Valley. Contact your local Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) church for details.
