ROANOKE VALLEY WORK FORCE GROWS

Virginia has added an estimated 101,000 jobs to its work force since last April, the best yearly employment gain since the spring of 1992, when job growth resumed in the state following the recession, the Virginia Employment Commission reported Friday.

The Roanoke Valley, with a 4.3 percent April-to-April gain, ranked second among the state's metropolitan areas, bested only by Northern Virginia. The Roanoke area's strongest job growth came in business and health services, whi ch grew by 3,600 jobs or 10.4 percent. But Roanoke's manufacturing base also grew by 700 jobs, or 3.7 percent.
