RITCH ENDS AGNEW'S MASTERY / COMPTON TAKES 2ND IN FEATURE

Michael Ritch put an end to Jeff Agnew's mastery of New River Valley Speedway.

Ritch, of High Point, N.C., passed Agnew on lap 63 and went on to win the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature in the double-points races of the Jesse Jones 200 on Saturday night.

Ritch and Agnew raced virtually side-by-side after a restart on lap 50. Ritch got the low groove and wore down Agnew until he could make the pass.

Once in front, Ritch's Chevrolet Lumina pulled away from the field.

"It ran like a dream tonight," Ritch said. "The car was awesome. We've been working on odds and ends, and the car finally came around."

Conversely, Agnew fell back and finished sixth - the worst performance of the season for the nine-time winner from Floyd.

Stacy Compton of Hurt slipped past Tony McGuire of Roanoke for second place in a battle for position that lasted the final 15 laps.

Ronnie Thomas of Christiansburg and Mike Dillon of Clemons, N.C. rounded out the top five.

In other races:

Christiansburg's Charlie Miles inherited the lead after an accident on lap 18 and went on to win the 35-lap Limited Sportsman race.

Miles was running fourth when the three cars in front of him wrecked.

Junior Leagans had the lead when a puff of smoke came from underneath his car as his motor blew. Leagans started to spin as he entered turn 4, and second-place Rock Harris slid into him.

Mark Akers, who was third, then approached the spinning cars. Because of traffic, the only place he could go was high in the turn. That's where Leagans and Harris slid, and Akers was pinned against the wall, receiving considerable damage to his car.

Tommy Allie of Christiansburg made it 2-for-2 in the Pure Stock division with an easy victory in the 25-lap race. Points-leader Davis Phillips was second, and Robbie Cundiff third.

Terry Hanks of Max Meadows started from the pole and led all 25 laps of the Mini Stock race. It was Hanks' second win of the year. Kevin Light held off Ray Sowers for second place.

The 25-lap Modified Mini Stock race was not completed by press time.
