Eight athletes competing for the Roanoke Valley Amateur Track and Field Club, all from Patrick Henry High School, recorded 17 top-five finishes. The top five finishers in each event advance to the Region III USATF Junior Olympics at Mount St. Mary's College in Maryland July 6-10. Region III consists of Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
Bowden won the javelin in the Young Women's division with a throw of 65 feet, 11 inches, and she placed fifth in the Shot put and 200-meter run. Mason win the Young Men's javelin with a personal-best toss of 125-11 and was third in the shot put and the discus. Speas won the Young Women's 3,000 in a time of 12 minutes, 8.1 seconds and was second in the 1,500 and the javelin.
The Roanoke club earned seven medals in the javelin, placing first and second in all three divisions and also taking third in the Intermediate Women's Division.
The heptathlon and decathlon were not part of Saturday's competition, but several Roanoke athletes already had earned regional berths. In the heptathlon, Bowden, who was 15th in the nation last year, advanced in the Young Women's Division, and Shana Waller will compete in the Intermediate Division. Mason, Robert McGrath and Jack Edwards will compete in the Young Men's decathlon.
