The Board of Supervisors and School Board formed a four-member subcommittee Monday to evaluate potential sites.
With residential development booming, Daleville is one of the fastest-growing sections of the county.
It does not have a fire station or a rescue squad in the immediate area. If current growth continues, planners believe an elementary school will be needed by the late 1990s.
County Administration Gerald Burgess said he hopes that the committee can find a site within 60 days.
Rapid development in the area is gobbling up available land and is driving real estate prices up.
"The longer you wait, the less land you have," Burgess said.
Burgess said the committee will be looking for a 25- to 50-acre tract in the Daleville community.
The land will need to be located near existing secondary roads, Burgess said.
Supervisors Chairman Bob Layman said the county can always sell the land if it finds it doesn't need it.
