Simpson, who lives nearby, was interviewed for several hours by police but wasn't arrested. His attorney said Simpson was ``devastated'' and was cooperating with investigators.
The bloodied bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson, 35, and Ronald Lyle Goldman, 25, were found on a private walkway leading to the woman's West Los Angeles condominium.
Simpson was briefly handcuffed at his home before being taken away by police.
``I know nothing,'' he said, looking grim as he got into a car that left for police headquarters about noon.
Asked if Simpson was a suspect, police Cmdr. David Gascon said, ``We are not going to rule anyone out.
``Obviously, we will be interviewing everyone that we think is remotely involved in this case,'' Gascon said at a news conference. ``Everyone is a witness at this point.''
Simpson spoke with authorities for about 31/2 hours before leaving police headquarters with his lawyer, Howard Weitzman.
Simpson, 46, didn't speak with reporters as he left.
``He is in shock, he is devastated. He had a tremendous amount of feeling for Nicole ... It's a tremendous loss,'' Weitzman said.
Simpson spent the day Sunday with his ex-wife and his children, then caught a flight for Chicago at about 11 p.m., Weitzman said. Shortly after he arrived in Chicago, police called him at his hotel to tell him his ex-wife was dead and asked him to return to Los Angeles.
The victims' bodies were found just after midnight, said Scott Carrier, a spokesman for the county coroner's office.
``We feel as though sharp-force injuries played a part'' in the deaths, Carrier said. He said that description could include stabbing.
At Simpson's estate about two miles away, yellow police tape was spread across the driveway gate Monday.
Police later placed cardboard markers in Simpson's driveway, marking small reddish brown droplets leading up the driveway to a point about 50 feet from the garage. Simpson's black Rolls-Royce was parked in the driveway.
In 1989, Simpson pleaded no contest to wife beating and was fined $700 and ordered to perform community service. He allegedly screamed ``I'll kill you'' as he slapped and kicked Nicole Simpson, his second wife.
Simpson and his ex-wife filed for divorce in 1992, but friends said they recently discussed getting back together. They have two children.
In recent years, Simpson has worked as a network TV sports commentator and has appeared in commercials and several motion pictures, including the three ``Naked Gun'' movies.
He won the Heisman Trophy, given to college football's outstanding player, in 1968 at the University of Southern California. The Buffalo Bills made him their first-round draft choice the following year, and he quickly became a National Football League star.
