``I remember saying, `The committee needs to understand that fund-raising professionals say what you're trying to do is impossible,''' Gring said Monday night.
Nevertheless, after a short but successful campaign, committee members Bill Stephens and Paul Dotson presented Gring with a commemorative check in the amount of $109,410 that will endow the Robert ``Guts'' McLelland Scholarship Fund.
Nearly 250 donors contributed to the fund, which went over the $100,000 mark with a $25,000 gift from the Roanoke Times & World-News.
McLelland, who died March 3 from cancer, was a well-known Roanoke sandlot football coach who also was remembered Monday night at a reception for his religious beliefs, love of family and unique brand of journalism.
Speakers included Sam McNeil, with whom McLelland helped form a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 1963; Roanoke City councilman John Edwards; and McLelland's wife, Barbara.
