OTHER RULINGS

In other actions Monday, the Supreme Court:

Ruled in a California case that states violate unionized workers' civil rights when they refuse to handle their claims of state wage law violations.

Threw out as an infringement on free speech Florida's attempt to bar lawyers from advertising that they also are licensed as certified public accountants.

Dealt a big-money defeat to federal regulators by making it harder in a California case to hold lawyers financially liable for failing to uncover insider wrongdoing at failed savings and loan associations.

Ruled, 5-4, in an Oklahoma case that a convicted murderer is not denied a fair sentencing trial if the jury considering his punishment is told he already is under a death sentence for another crime.

Decided a New York dispute in a way that makes it harder for people to avoid cigarette taxes by shopping on Indian reservations.

Agreed to decide, sometime in 1995, whether the federal government may prevent brewers from labeling beer bottles and cans to show how much alcohol they contain.
