BATEMAN, Richard J. Jr., 73, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, June 14, 1994, in a Salem hospital. Mr. Bateman was a native of Troy, N.Y. A Graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Class of 1955. He retired from General Electric Corporation in 1985 after 33 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen Maloney Bateman. Surviving are children, Richard J. and Hester Ann Bateman III; Paul and Lib King Bateman, Patrick and Novie Bateman, Mary Lee and Mickey Bennett. Funeral services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 11 a.m., Friday, June 17, 1994, with interment in St. Peter's Cemetery, Troy, N.Y. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Cahoon, Fincastle; one son, Wayne Eugene Cahoon, Douglasville, Ga.; one daughter, Teresa Rasnick, Fincastle; two sisters, Ruby Caldwell, Covington, Annie Lucado, Troutville; three grandchildren, Heather Ann Cahoon, Adriane Rasnick, Justin Rasnick. EVANS, Ora Ellen, 87, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, June 15, 1994, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home, Shawsville. Miss Evans was born in Montgomery County, on July 24, 1906, daughter of the late James Floyd Evans and Mary Jane Wall Evans. Survivors include four cousins, Hattie Guynn, Vance Wall, and Joe Wall all of Blacksburg, Robertine Hawkins, New Market. KEESEE, Maxie Mae, 84, of 6209 Cierra Circle, Rockford, Tenn., died Wednesday, June 15, 1994, at her home. She was a native of Mendota, Va. and a former resident of Glade Spring & Chilhowie. She was the widow of James Roy Keesee and a member of the Chilhowie Christian Church. KIRBY, Pearl May Taylor, 93, of Columbus, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 14, 1994, at the Arlington Court Nursing Home. She is survived by her husband, Fred W. Kirby; stepson, Fred Kirby Jr. of Delray Beach, Fla.; sisters, Vergie Settle of Parkersburg, West Va., Billie Gregory of White Sulphur Springs, West Va.; brothers, Everett Taylor of Daytona Beach, Fla., Ernest Taylor of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of First Community Church of Columbus; a charter member of Guild Group I organized in 1938; and past president of Columbus Chapter of Professional Secretaries International. She retired after 37 years with National Electric Coil, Division of McGraw Edison, as secretary to two presidents. MATTHEWS, Thomas David, (``T.D.''), a Franklin County dairy farmer, died suddenly at his home Wednesday, June 15, 1994. He was born May 29, 1922, in the Dugwell Section of Franklin Co., the son of the late Dave and Maggie Woody Matthews. He is survived by his wife, Betty Ingram Matthews; his daughter and son-in-law, Delaine and Cecil Ryman, Greensboro, N.C.; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas David Jr. and Janette Matthews, Rocky Mount; his son, Creg Fountain Matthews, Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Bryan David Matthews, Justin Galen Matthews and Kristi Lynn Matthews; two sisters, Mrs. Richard (Geneva) Carter, Roanoke, Mrs. William (M abel) Allen, Woodstock; a brother, John Willis Matthews, Sr., Glasgow; a nephew, John Willis Matthews Jr. and wife, Brenda, Staunton. NININGER, James Taliaferro, Jr., (Skip), 43, of Salem passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 14, 1994. He was a building official and zoning administer for the City of Salem and held a similar position in Roanoke County prior to coming to Salem. He attended West Salem Baptist Church. Skip was a avid hunter and fisherman. A member of the Virginia Building Officials Association. He was certified as a Master Building Inspector . He was also the Vice President of Building Inspections, Inc. in Salem. He is preceded in death by his mother, Peggy G. Nininger. The survivors include his wife, Teresa Straub Nininger; son and daughter-in-law, James Nathan and Mary Ellen Nininger; daughter, Tara Taliaferro Nininger; father, James T. Nininger Sr. A memorial service wil be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 1994 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem with the Rev. Michael L. Slaughter and the Rev. Bobby J. VIA, William Wyley, 87, of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, June 14, 1994 at his home. Mr. Via was born in Callaway on March 10, 1907. As a teenager, he went to work for the American Viscose Company in Roanoke. In 1958, when the plant closed in Roanoke, Mr. Via was transferred to the Fredericksburg cellophane plant. In 1968 he retired from the FMC plant. When Germanna College was being constructed, he was the clerk of the w orks. He was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church serving as a deacon and elder at the Belmont Presbyterian Church and Raleigh Court Presbyterian Churches in Roanoke. At the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, Mr. Via was an elder and played an active part in the maintenance of the church facilities. Mr. Via was a member of the Masonic Lodge No 4 A.F. and A.M. and a member of the Shriners and the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Civil War Round Table and the Foremans Club. Survivors include his wife, Leona Markham Via; a son, William Markham Via; a daughter, Jane Ellen Via Illi; two grandsons, Robert and David Illi. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Presbyterian Church, 811 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
