FINAL AT-BATS FOR PREP TEAMS

The long high school sports season is due to end Friday when two Timesland schools go after state championships.

James River will play host to Powhatan Friday at 6 p.m. at the softball field by the school when the teams play for the Group A state softball title. James River earned the finals berth by beating Glenvar 3-2 in the semifinals to avenge three earlier losses to the Highlanders. The Knights had won the first game between the two schools before the three losses.

In baseball, Glenvar travels to Victoria and will play Lunenburg Central at 5 p.m. on Friday for the Group A state title.

According to a reliable source, former Altavista coach Stu Richardson has been hired by Varina as the new boys' basketball coach of the Group AAA school located in Henrico County.

Richardson won over 200 games at Altatvista before being dismissed this spring as the school's basketball coach. Richardson had also applied for the opening at Dinwiddie. Earlier, he had been in the hunt for the job vacancy at Cave Spring, which was filled by Chris Carr.
