\ NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE in Dublin has announced the names of its spring graduates from the Roanoke area. They are: Nora Nunnery Smith of Salem; and Carl D. Cress III, Michael W. Davis and Frank J. Wolfe Jr., all of Roanoke.
\ ROBERT JENKINS, professor of biology at Roanoke College, has received a $5,553 grant from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to fund a population-status survey of the candy darter, a fish that is endemic to the New River drainage.
Because populations of this fish have been declining recently, a survey will help determine whether the candy darter should be placed on state and federal lists of endangered species.
Also, the Mednick Fellowships Committee of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges has awarded Jenkins a $550 grant for travel expenses to the Clinch River in Southwest Virginia for research on spawning behavior of the river redhorse, a freshwater fish.
\ CHARLENE KALINOSKI, assistant professor of foreign languages at Roanoke College, has been awarded a $750 stipend to attend the 1994 workshop, "Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Culture and Civilization of Latin America."
The workshop is sponsored by the Duke University of North Carolina Program in Latin American Studies. Kalinoski is one of 10 participants selected from colleges in the mid-South region. The workshop will consist of lectures and discussions in the areas of art, demographic issues, history, politics, literature and Brazil.
\ THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF FRENCH recently named several Roanoke Valley students who competed and placed in the The National French Contest.
The Roanoke area winners in Level 1 were: Shari Perkins of North Cross, first place; Tracy Reed and Marie Keith, both of Lord Botetourt, second place tie; Lindsey Hoagland of North Cross, third place; Amanda Jones, Meagan Crowder, and Justin Hurst, all of Lord Botetourt, received fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Level 2 winners were: Sylvana Sinha of North Cross, first place; Andrea Henderson of Lord Botetourt, second place; Karen Jargowsky and Sara Dudley, both of Lord Botetourt, third place tie; Mary Beth Ladenheim of Lord Botetourt, fourth place; Stephanie Yost and Kari McGlamary, both of Lord Botetourt, fifth place tie; and Leigh Ann Jones of William Fleming, sixth place.
Level 3 winners were: Jason Mundy of Salem High School, first place; Evan Richardson of Lord Botetourt, second place; Claire Brewer of Fleming and Alyson Montgomery of Lord Botetourt, third place tie; Emily Morrison and Cindy Harris, both of Lord Botetourt, fourth place tie; Christy Fons and April Mattox, both of Lord Botetourt, placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Kristina Patterson of Lord Botetourt placed first in the Roanoke area and third in the state on Level 4.
On Level 5, Sandra Williams of Cave Spring was first in the area, state and region; and Khaled Alami of Cave Spring was second in the area, state and region and fifth in the nation.
\ CADET RUSSELL BOOTH, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Booth of Roanoke, was named to the academic honors list at Hargrave Military Academy for the fifth grading period. He is a freshman.
