FRED BURTNER, owner and operator of the Rent-A-Wreck franchise in Roanoke, has been named to the company's new advisory council.

The council represents more than 400 Rent-A-Wreck franchise owners in the United States, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

The Roanoke location recently moved to 2006 Peters Creek Road N.W.

\ AMERICAN BIOSYSTEMS INC. in Roanoke recently received a Governor's Award for Excellence for its participation in and sponsorship of the Virginia Department of Economic Development's International Market Planning program.

In the program, teams of graduate business students at Virginia colleges and universities are paired with Virginia companies interested in expanding their exports.

\ HILLS DEPARTMENT STORES in Roanoke recently gave pins, representing years of service to several employees.

\ LIN CHAFF PUBLIC RELATIONS & ADVERTISING recently received a Medallion Award at the 47th annual Virginia Public Relations Awards.

The award, in the Special Projects, Business/Industry or Government, Low Budget category, was for the firm's managing of publicity surrounding the sale of Tanglewood Mall.
