ELIZABETH M. WILES, daughter of William A. Wiles of Roanoke, received a National Merit Scholarship from Norfolk Southern Corporation. Norfolk Southern awarded scholarships to selected students who are children of Norfolk Southern employees.

\ HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE recently awarded degrees to the following Roanoke Valley residents: Eric Franklin Early, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F. Early, bachelor of arts; N. Douglas Payne Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald D. Ryan, bachelor of arts; Robert Woods Spessard III, son of Hesta Spessard, bachelor of arts; James Brian Hopkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. James S. Hopkins, Jr., bachelor of arts; Bradford Keith Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin E. Harris, bachelor of arts; Geoffrey Keith Gilmore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Gilmore, bachelor of arts; Peter A. Hall, son of Mrs. Nance A. Hall, bachelor of arts; John Cason Newbern, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Newbern III, bachelor of science.

\ SARA KEMPER GOODMAN of Roanoke recently graduated with a bachelor of arts from Campbell University.

\ EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY, in Greenville, N.C., has announced the names of those Roanoke area students who were named to honors lists. The chancellor's list names those students who have received all A's; the dean's list is those with a B-plus average; and the honor roll includes students with a B average.

Michelle Ann Barbery, daughter of Edwin C. and Christina C. Barbery of Roanoke, has been named to the chancellor's list.

Those named to the dean's list are: Charlotte E. McDonald, daughter of Thomas R. McDonald of Roanoke, and Charlotte S. McDonald of Salem; Abigail Leigh Pack, daughter of Joel and Emily Pack, of Roanoke; and Melanie Love Morris, daughter of Linda W. Morris, of Roanoke.

Those named to the honor roll are: Terence James McNulty, son of Colleen B. McNulty, of Roanoke; Heather Lee O'Brian, daughter of Jerry D. and Rita Lee O'Brian of Roanoke; and Beth Ellyn Dinnerville, daughter of Robert and Janice Dinnerville, of Roanoke.
