MAN HELD WITHOUT BOND IN ALLEGED RAPE ATTEMPT

Still wearing a hospital gown, Jean W. Bosue was arraigned Wednesday in Roanoke General District Court on a charge of attempting to rape a 25-year-old Southwest Roanoke woman in her apartment June 7.

Bosue was arrested late Tuesday, shortly after he was released from Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he had been recovering from a gunshot wound received when the woman shot him during the alleged attack.

Bosue, a 24-year-old Haitian refugee who speaks only Creole French, is being held in Roanoke City Jail without bond.

Since Bosue's arraignment was hampered by a language barrier, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Wanda DeWease said the procedure probably will be repeated once a state-certified translator can be located.

Judge Julian Raney appointed a public defender to represent Bosue.

Also on Wednesday, Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell said he did not anticipate seeking charges against the woman who shot Bosue. He said he has not received a final report from police, but it appears the woman was acting in self-defense.

At the time of the alleged attack, Bosue had been in Roanoke for just four days after he fled Haiti in a refugee boat and was allowed to enter the United States.
