VMI COACH'S TOP PROSPECT HAS ARRIVED

It will be a September to remember for first-year VMI football coach Bill Stewart and his wife, Karen, who is expected to give birth Sept.5 - two days after the Keydets open their season against Richmond in Lexington.

The Stewarts, who have been married for 16 years, do not have any other children. Bill Stewart, introduced Jan.3 as the Keydets' coach, was in the middle of recruiting when his wife called from Colorado with news of their long-awaited prospect.

Stewart, who turned 41 on Saturday, came to VMI after four years as an assistant coach at Air Force Academy, one of a handful of teams still using the Wishbone offense. However, he hopes the Keydets' scheme will resemble more closely the pass-oriented attack he helped install at William and Mary.

Stewart also was an assistant at Arizona State, North Carolina and Navy, where his boss was current Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill. Stewart said he never has worked with a finer coach than Tranquill.

``Behind his back we call him `The Master,''' said Stewart, referring to a group that includes West Virginia defensive coordinator Steve Dunlap and Syracuse quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers. ``I told Steve, `Don't try to match wits with [Tranquill]. You can't outsmart him.'''

JUST ARRIVED: Jody Moir, wife of Roanoke College men's basketball coach Page Moir, gave birth June 6 to their second daughter, Sara Charles Moir, who gets her middle name from her paternal grandfather, the former Roanoke and Virginia Tech head coach. ... Washington and Lee lacrosse coach Jim Stagnitta became a father for the first time when wife Lauri gave birth Saturday to a daughter, Alexis Beth, who has inherited her father's trademark red hair.

PRODIGAL SONS: William Propst, who led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in receiving in each of his first two years at Washington and Lee, will be rejoining the Generals after a year's absence.

Coach Gary Fallon also was heartened to learn that offensive lineman Tom Garber and running back Matthew Mogk would be returning after missing the 1993 season. Mogk has not played since 1991, when he rushed for 162 of the team's 242 yards.

Three other upperclassmen will be playing for the first time, and the Generals have added Adam Snow, a defensive lineman from Richardson, Texas, who spent his first year at Virginia. Fallon expects 30 freshmen, half as many (one) from Nova Scotia as from Virginia.

STAAK STUFF: It was a good spring for former Wake Forest basketball coach Bob Staak and his staff. Staak was named an assistant with the NBA's Washington Bullets and former aides Dennis Wolff, Jerry Wainwright and Jeff Capel got Division I head-coaching jobs at Boston University, North Carolina-Wilmington and Old Dominion, respectively.

STAFF STUFF: Virginia Commonwealth restricted-earnings coach Mike Ellis, a former North Carolina basketball manager, has emerged as a serious contender for the restricted-earnings job at Virginia. UVa's chances of landing one-time Navy head coach Pete Herrmann could hinge on a position opening for Herrmann's wife, a Kansas State professor.

nDave Gavitt, stripped of much of his power in a Boston Celtics reorganization Tuesday, is viewed as a possible successor to Gene Corrigan as ACC commissioner. Some ACC insiders would like to see Gavitt get the Maryland athletic director's job to familiarize himself with the conference.

RECRUITING: Ryan Sullivan, younger and shorter (6-3) brother of North Carolina forward Pat Sullivan, has accepted a scholarship to play for the Tar Heels next season. ... Jon Kerner, a backup center for Florida State, has transferred to East Carolina. ... Post player Shun Sheffield has transferred to Tulane after three years at Tennessee.

ON THE SAME PAGE: The Colonial Athletic Association, in its spring meeting, voted not to accept partial qualifiers. George Mason had two Proposition 48 basketball players sitting out this year in Kevin Ward and Nathan Langley.

HINES HONORED: Point guard Derrick Hines from William Fleming High School in Roanoke has been invited to the Nike All-American Festival in Indianapolis, where the nation's top 100 prospects are showcased each summer. He will be joined by 6-9 Marvin Rodgers from Churchland High School in Portsmouth.

MAROONS RELOADING: Defenseman Patrick Yanarelli from Ridgewood (N.J.) High School has become the third Roanoke College lacrosse recruit to make an All-America team, joining attackman Keith Wempe from West Islip, N.Y., and midfielder Dan Keating from Philadelphia Episcopal School.

Other future Maroons include Cave Spring goalie Jeff Walrond, most valuable player in the championship game of the Roanoke Valley Lacrosse League, and six players from Boys' Latin High School in Baltimore. Coach Bill Pilat also received a commitment from Mike Treacy, younger brother of former Roanoke All-American Don Treacy.

ODDS AND ENDS: Washington and Lee was ranked sixth in the final Division III women's tennis poll. ... Pete Lefresne, assistant sports information director at VMI, is serving as a media liaison at soccer's World Cup.
