PESTICIDE STOPS CEREAL SHIPPING

General Mills said this week that oats used in producing its popular Cheerios and other cereals had been treated with an unapproved pesticide. The government said there was no health threat, and no cereal is being recalled from store shelves.

The Golden Valley, Minn.-based company said it was voluntarily halting shipments of the oat-bran cereals affected by the pesticides. It expects to resume shipping in a few days.

A recent routine inspection of whole grain oats in General Mills' grain elevators at Duluth, Minn., and Superior, Wis., by the Food and Drug Administration turned up the pesticide chlorpyrifos-ethyl, when chlorpyrifos-methyl was supposed to be used. General Mills found that an independent licensed pesticide contractor had improperly made the substitution.
