PLO PLANS TO APPOINT VATICAN REPRESENTATIVE

The Palestine Liberation Organization will soon appoint a representative to the Vatican, the PLO's envoy in Italy said Saturday.

Vatican spokesmen were not available for comment Saturday.

Shortly after the agreement six months ago establishing diplomatic ties between the Holy See and Israel, the Vatican received a PLO delegation and announced a phase of "more official dialogue" with Palestinians.

Nemer Hammad, the PLO's representative to Italy, said he expected that within "a very few weeks," the Vatican and the PLO should have an agreement enabling the PLO to appoint an envoy. - Associated Press
