UVA NAMES TOP ACADEMIC OFFICER

Peter W. Low, the University of Virginia's acting provost since January, has been named the school's chief academic officer.

President John T. Casteen III named Low vice president and provost Friday.

Low, 57, will oversee more than 1,000 faculty members in eight schools, related centers and research programs, libraries, art museums, undergraduate admissions and academic support programs.

He is a former associate dean for academic affairs at the law school and became acting provost after Thomas H. Jackson stepped down to take the presidency of the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y.

Low has been on the school's faculty since 1964.
