AREA RUNNERS HONORED

Jeff Stone of Salem and Sue Given of Roanoke have been honored as Running Journal's Grand Prix Runners of the Year for the 1993-94 season. Stone, 38, was chosen in the male 35-39 age group, Given, 41, in the female 40-44 category.

Given also was a runner-up in the female overall competition behind Janice Cole of Columbia, S.C. Stone has earned Grand Prix awards in each of the past two years.

Running Journal is a publication that covers 13 southeastern states and Washington, D.C. The Grand Prix is a series of 16 road races from five kilometers to marathon distances in which a runner accumulates points based on the performance in each race.

In other news in the region:

Old Dominion won .667 of its Division I intercollegiate athletic contests in 1993-94 to capture the 16th annual Virginia Sports Information Director's Association state survey announced Saturday in Norfolk.

Virginia had won the past five titles.

Old Dominion also led the 10 Division I schools in women's percentage at .676. Virginia was second at .620. James Madison led the 11 Division I schools in men's percentage at .681. Old Dominion was second at .661. Virginia Military Institute does not admit women.

The Virginia men's soccer team was one of two state Division I teams to capture a national championship. George Mason's trap and skeet team captured its ninth consecutive collegiate title. Virginia's men's lacrosse team took second place and its women's lacrosse squad reached the semifinals.

George Mason's women's soccer team reached the NCAA finals. Old Dominion's sailing team placed second in the intercollegiate sloop national championships.

The 11 Virginia Division I schools captured 24 conference championships. James Madison was the leader with six, while Old Dominion won five and Virginia Tech four.

Overall, Virginia Division I schools compiled a 1742-1427-39 for a winning percentage of .549. Men's teams finished at the 972-781-26 mark (.554) and women's teams finished at 770-646-13 (.543).
