BIG 6TH LIFTS BUCS

The Salem Buccaneers took advantage of Lynchburg's wildness in the field and on the mound and used a four-run sixth inning to beat the Red Sox 9-3 Saturday night at City Stadium.

Lynchburg committed a club-record seven errors that led to six unearned runs. The pitchers weren't blameless, however, demonstrated by 10 hits allowed and four wild pitches delivered, one by each Lynchburg pitcher.

Salem took advantage in the sixth, an inning that began with the score tied at 3. Jon Farrell and Jeff Conger reached on errors, Marcus Hanel singled in a run, Farrell came home on a wild pitch and Eddie Brooks made it 7-3 by hitting a two-run homer over the left-field fence, his first homer since being called up to Salem last week.

The Bucs got more help in the eighth. Dario Tena led off with a walk and scored when right fielder Dan Collier misplayed Chance Sanford's double. After another error and a walk, Sanford scored on a wild pitch.

Salem took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a three-run double by Mitch House. Lynchburg tied it in the bottom of the inning, with help from Trot Nixon's two-run double.

Danny Young (1-0) got the victory despite giving up four hits in two innings of relief. Steve Hayward (3-8) was the loser after surrendering five hits and six runs - one earned - in five-plus innings.

Tena and Sanford each had two hits for Salem (32-36).
