LYNCHBURG NIPS BUCS

The Salem Buccaneers ended the first half of the Carolina League season by losing 4-3 to the Lynchburg Red Sox in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday at City Stadium.

Salem (32-37), which was in contention a few weeks ago to win the Southern Division first-half title, finished in third place behind Winston-Salem and Kinston. Lynchburg (30-40) completed the first half in the Northern Division's basement behind Wilmington, Prince William and Frederick.

The Bucs trailed 3-0 Sunday before rallying for two runs in the top of the eighth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Jake Austin and Mitch House each singled up the right-field line, giving the Bucs runners at first and third. First baseman Reed Secrist sacrificed House to second before designated hitter Jason Kendall scored Austin on a single to center. House was thrown out at the plate by Trot Nixon to end the inning.

Lynchburg designated hitter J.J. Johnson began the Red Sox's retaliation in the bottom of the ninth with a single to left field. Bill Selby then dropped a bunt single up the first-base line, advancing Johnson to third. Dan Collier's punch single to right field drove Johnson home to end the game.

Gettys Glaze (3-1) pitched the eighth and ninth innings and earned the victory. Sean Evans (1-4), who came on in the eighth, took the loss.

The Bucs have today off before kicking off the second half of the season with a seven-game homestand. Salem starts a three-game series against Prince William on Tuesday, followed by four games against Winston-Salem.
