Record companies sue station

More than a dozen record companies have filed suit against Roanoke radio station WTOY, alleging copyright infringement because the station failed to pay a required licensing agreement.

The suit filed in U.S. District Court Monday said the radio station, operated by Ward Broadcasting Co., stopped paying the required fee to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers on June 8, 1993.

The federal suit asks that the station be barred from playing copyrighted songs until the fee is paid. It also asks for damages up to $100,000.

The radio station has not filed a response to the suit.
