'TREK' TRIVIA, AND MORE SCI-FI STUFF

1. How old can a Trill host be and still be considered for joining with a symbiont?

2. Who played Commissioner Nancy Hedford in the ``Trek''-classic episode ``Metamorphosis''?

3. In the ``DS9'' episode ``In the Hands of the Prophets,'' she sabotaged the space station's weapons-detection system, planted a terrorist bomb and attempted to assassinate Vedek Bareil (Philip Anglim). Name the character and the actress who played her.

4. Data (Brent Spiner) was discovered by Starfleet on the ruins of the colony where he was built. What was the name of that colony?

5. ``Free advice is seldom cheap.'' That's one of Quark's (Armin Shimerman) Rules of Acquisition. Which ``Rule'' is it and in which episode was it revealed?

6. The animated ``Trek''-classic episode ``One of Our Planets Is Missing'' was written by a veteran ``Trek''-classic director. Can you name him?

7. ``Send in the Clones'' was the original title of which ``Next Gen'' episode?

8. What ``Trek'' performer has the distinction of having portrayed a spouse on two top-rated television shows and their spinoffs?

9. Her writing and/or production credits include ``Quincy, M.E.,'' ``The Incredible Hulk,'' ``Magnum, P.I.'' and ``Next Gen.'' Who is she?

10. What could Lore (Brent Spiner) do while talking that Data can't?

Answers

1. Trill hosts are accepted into their mid-20s. (Thanks to Angela Morey of Redmond, Va., for this question.)

2. Commissioner Hedford was played by Elinor Donahue, best known as Robert Young's daughter Betty on the TV series ``Father Knows Best.''

3. The character was Neela, a Bajoran religious activist whose crimes were committed on behalf of Vedek Winn (Louise Fletcher). Robin Christopher played Neela.

4. Omicron Theta. Data was built by Dr. Noonian Soong (Brent Spiner) after the completion of his ``brother,'' Lore (Spiner again). (Thanks to Aileen May Nepmuceno of Glendale, Calif.)

Please, no letters on the spelling of Soong's first name. It's spelled ``Noonian'' in the ``Datalore'' and ``Brothers'' scripts, but it is ``Noonien'' in ``The Trek Encyclopedia'' by Denise and Mike Okuda and Debbie Mirek (Pocket Books, 1994).

5. It's ``Rule'' No. 59, first uttered, appropriately enough, in the ``DS9'' episode ``Rules of Acquisition.''

6. Marc Daniels wrote ``Planets'' and directed such ``Trek''-classic episodes as ``The Man Trap'' and ``Space Seed.''

7. It was ``Up the Long Ladder.'' The ``Clones'' title survived until well after the scripts were printed.

8. Rosalind Chao was Klinger's (Jamie Farr) war bride in both ``M*A*S*H'' and ``AfterM*A*S*H,'' and appeared as Keiko on ``Next Gen'' and ``DS9.'' (Thanks to Mike Bartholomew of Wheeling, Ill.)

9. She's Jeri Taylor, executive producer of ``Next Gen,'' who is now at work on ``Voyager.''

10. Lore could use contractions while conversing. (Thanks to Steve Rubin of Chicago.)

Sci-fi extra

nSylvester Stallone has signed to play Judge Dredd in the big-budget film of the same name, which will be based on the British futuristic series of comic books. Filming will begin late this summer for a summer 1995 release.

nPleased with the results of ``Space Ghost Coast to Coast,'' the animated show in which the superhero spirit interviews real-life 20th-century personalities, the Cartoon Network has ordered an additional 13 episodes, enough to last until next summer.

n Playmates Toys offers a variety of ``seaQuest DSV'' collectibles, ranging from action figures of the main characters (including Darwin the dolphin) to several submarines. They're available at most major toy stores and collectibles shops.
