LEARNING DOESN'T STOP IN SUMMERTIME|

Hey, kids, don't get too comfortable in those poolside lounge chairs or in front of the tube! SUMMER SCHOOL CLASSES are just around the corner. Here's what is going on at Montgomery County Public Schools:

Summer enrichment classes are being offered for grades 1-12 , covering topics like creative writing, computer exploration, foreign languages, math and science. High school students may also choose from early graduation classes, behind-the-wheel drivers education and classroom drivers education. Three other programs for children of various ages are the Middle School Institute, the Elementary Reading and Math Camp, and the Preschool Handicapped Program.

Final registration is due by Wednesday. Stop by the school your child attends for program brochures.

Early graduation classes will begin Wednesday. Regular summer school classes and the Elementary Reading Camp will begin Monday. For summer bus schedules or other transportation information, call 382-5151.

The Stanley Kaplan Educational Center in Blacksburg is offering summer classes starting Monday to help students prepare for the SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE TEST. The classes will meet in 12 three-hour sessions from 9 a.m. to noon through July 27. For more information, call the center at 552-TEST.

The Virginia Council on Vocational Education has named Hubbell Lighting and Christiansburg Middle School to receive a 1994 Business and Industry Partnership Award. The award will be presented tonight at a banquet in Richmond.

RICHARD BALLENGEE, instructional supervisor for Montgomery County Schools, has been named chairman of the region VI Virginia Association of Vocational Administrators. Ballengee was also recognized for 25 years of service to vocational education.

Pulaski County High School's Theatre Program recently recognized PAUL DELLINGER of the Roanoke Times & World-News as this year's honorary thespian. Dellinger, who covers Pulaski County, has written several articles on the group's progress and presentations that have helped bring an audience to their performances. Dellinger was honored by the group and presented a plaque at an awards ceremony.

The Riner Ruritan Club honored four Riner Elementary School pupils on June 14 with a dinner for their performance in the first annual FLAG DAY EXPRESSIONS CONTEST. The four winners, Whitney Hawkins, Carrie Floyd, Lori Smith, and Lynda Underwood, were awarded U. S. Savings Bonds.

The Montgomery County high schools have announced their SENIOR OF THE MONTH finalists for May.

Vicki Lynn Graham of Auburn High School is a member of Future Homemakers of America and Future Business Leaders of America. She is in the Spanish Club, the College Club, and the Beta Club. Vicki is the daughter of Rosemary Graham and the late Ronnie Graham of Riner.

Kara Hohenshil of Blacksburg High School is class secretary and co-editor of the yearbook. She is a member of the dance team, the National Honor Society, and Students Against Drunk Driving. Kara is the daughter of Thomas and Susan Hohenshil of Blacksburg.

Crystal Dawn Clay of Christiansburg High School is on the yearbook staff and the Mountain Academic Competition Conference English Team. She is in the Ecology Club, the Astronomy Club and the National Honor Society. Crystal is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Clay of Christiansburg.

Jennifer Laura Flight of Shawsville High School is a member of Peer Counselors and Students Against Drunk Driving. She is in the Drama Club, the Spanish Club and on the cross country team. Jennifer is the daughter of William and Laura Flight of Shawsville.

JAMES WILLIAM HARDIE graduated from the Blue Ridge School in Dyke, Va. on May 27. James was a member of the Honor Council and the varsity track and football teams. He plans to attend Lynchburg College. James is the son of Mary Lou Hardie of Christiansburg.

CHRISTOPHER W. LINDEN has graduated from Christchurch School in Christchurch, Va. Christopher participated in the Young Democrats Club and played soccer, indoor soccer and lacrosse. He will attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in the fall. Christopher is the son of Ann P. Linden of Blacksburg.

Here's the latest at BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL:

Sixteen photography and fashion merchandising students traveled to Atlanta in April to research their fields. The fashion students saw the latest styles at the Atlanta Apparel Mart and learned how to prepare for a fashion career at the Atlanta Art Institute. The photography students went on several photo shoots throughout the city. Ellen Agee, the fashion merchandising instructor, and Mike Kaylor, the photography instructor, coordinated the trip.

Members of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America did well at the recent state competition in Richmond. Misty Hendrick placed fifth in prepared speech and fourth in essay. Brian Birch placed third in technical illustration. The Opening and Closing Team took first place.

The dance troop the Tribe competed at Busch Gardens and won first place in its division.

Nine French students performed exceptionally on the National French Examination. The exam tests their reading, writing, and listening abilities as well as their knowledge of French culture. German Portillo, Robbie Emmett, Rasheq Rahman, Marjana Borojevic, Michelle Eden, and Eleanor Lee placed in the top 15 in the state of Virginia in their respective levels. Michael Shumsky, Nahla Durrani, and Mark Rohr each placed in the top 15 nationally.
