NAMES ON CAMPUS

S.J. RITCHEY, professor of human nutrition and foods and former dean of the College of Human Resources, has received the 1994 American Home Economics Association Distinguished Service Award. The award will be presented this month at the AHEA annual meeting in San Diego. Ritchey will retire at the end of the academic year. He has been granted the status of professor and dean emeritus of the college.

Dean PEGGY S. MESZAROS of the college of Human Resources has been appointed to the Gerontology Center Advisory Board. The center - a cooperative venture of Virginia Tech, Radford University, New River Community College and Warm Hearth Village - was created to promote research and teaching to enhance the quality of life for older people.

THOMAS W. LONG, an instructor in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, recently conducted a food and beverage control seminar in Quito, Ecuador, sponsored by the Ecuador Ministry of Tourism.

LIBBY GUSTIN, a doctoral student in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, received a second place award in the humanities division for her poster presentation at the 10th annual Virginia Tech Graduate Research Symposium. Along with Professor PAMELA A. WEAVER, she researched "The Intention to Purchase a Night's Stay in a Hotel: An Empirical Test of the Hines' Model of Responsible Environmental Behavior."

HOWARD FEIERTAG of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management recently addressed the annual meeting of the American Hotel and Motel Association in Denver on "Tight-fisted Marketing." He also addressed the annual general managers' conferences of Servico Inc. and Holiday Inn.

ROBERT C. HOEHN, professor of environmental engineering, is the new chairman for the Virginia Section of the American Water Works Association. The association focuses on the health effects of drinking water, environmental advocacy pressures, regulations and budget cuts.

IRENA VIDA, a graduate student in the Department of Clothing and Textiles, has received a Best Student Paper recognition from the International Academy of Business Disciplines at its annual conference in Pittsburgh. Department head MARJORIE NORTON was the paper's co-author.

Doctoral candidate CINDY REGAN has become the first student in the department of Clothing and Textiles to receive a U.S. Department of Energy pre-doctoral fellowship in integrated manufacturing. The three-year award carries an annual stipend and education allowance of up to $105,000. Regan and assistant Professor DORIS KINCADE recently presented a paper at the fourth International Conferences on Flexible Automation and Integrated Manufacturing at Virginia Tech.

This year's Massachusetts Turfgrass Conference was dedicated to HOUSTON B. COUCH, professor of plant pathology, physiology and weed science. Couch has addressed the past 25 sessions of the Massachusetts conference. The third edition of his book, "Diseases of Turfgrass," is due out this summer. He has published more than 100 papers and 10 book chapters during his nearly 40-year career.

ERIC MCCOLLUM, who directs the Center for Family Services at the Virginia Tech Northern Virginia Graduate Center, has been named to the editorial board of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.

Hospitality and Tourism Management head MAHMOOD A. KHAN will attend a meeting of the Governor's Task Force on Tourism. He is a member of the group that will assist the task force in preparing its report. Khan also has been named editor of two new professional journals, the Journal of Nutrition in Recipe and Menu Development and the Journal of College and University Foodservice.

ERNIE ANDREWS, associate director for university placement services, has received the Outstanding Service Award from the Middle Atlantic Placement Association at the group's annual conference in Philadelphia.

Mechanical engineering Professor WALTER F. O'BRIEN has been named vice president of the International Gas Turbine Institute of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The 123,000-member society is a worldwide engineering society that focuses on technical, educational and research issues.
