CATERPILLAR ON STRIKE

Thousands of Caterpillar Inc. workers struck the world's largest earth-moving equipment maker Tuesday in the latest skirmish of a three-year contract dispute.

The United Auto Workers vowed to idle 13,300 umion members at plants in Illinois, Denver and York, Pa. By midafternoon Tuesday, workers had struck at five Illinois plants with about 9,800 union workers: Decatur, East Peoria, Mapleton, Mossville and Pontiac.
