Health, safety fair

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Daycare and Child Development Center's Parent Teacher Association is sponsoring a free health and safety fun fair for preschool and elementary school children and their parents on Saturday.

The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Blacksburg Daycare and Child Development Center, 844 University City Blvd.

Children attending will learn about recycling, nutrition, crime, law enforcement, and fire safety. The fair's volunteers will fingerprint children and measure their height, weight and blood pressure.

The fair will feature McGruff the Crime Dog, Smokey the Bear, and Sparky the Fire Dog. Free refreshments will be served.

Shawsville parade

SHAWSVILLE - The Shawsville Ruritan Club is seeking entries for the Fourth of July parade. The parade will get under way at 4 p.m. on July 4.

Cash prizes will be awarded for floats and in the children's bicycle decorating contest.

Prospective entrants should call 268-5405 by July 1 to register.

Fourth in Floyd

FLOYD - The Floyd County merchants' and Businessmen's Association is seeking musicians, singers and dancers to enter the second annual Mountain Music Festival and Competition July 4 at Floyd County High School. Participants may register by mail or on July 4 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the school.

The festival is limited to 25 bands.

Entry fees are $5 for bands and $2 for individuals, but there is no entry fee for the dance category. Cash prizes will be awarded, except in the dance category.

'Love Letters' tryouts

BLACKSBURG - The Company Players, a division of Playmakers & Company, will hold auditions for the play "Love Letters" by A.R. Gurney Sunday, 2-4 p.m. at Playmakers & Company Playhouse, University Mall. Performances are scheduled for July 15,16 and 17.

Parts are available for both men and women. No experience is necessary. Technical crew members also are needed.

Dairy field day

GLADE SPRING - The Virginia Dairy Conservation Field Day will be held Friday, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., on the David DeBusk farm off Interstate 81, exit 29 (follow the signs).

Virginia Agriculture Commissioner J. Carlton Courter III will speak at 11:30 a.m. A barbecue lunch and refreshments will be available.
