Roanoke Police Sgt. J.W. Slusher said Darryl Barksdale, 19, a passenger in the front seat, suffered massive head wounds when the right side of the car hit the left rear corner of the trailer at 12:55 a.m.
Barksdale was in very serious condition in the neurotrauma intensive care unit at Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Tuesday night.
Jermaine V. Keeling, 19, and Jermaine Johnson, 18, had less serious injuries.
Slusher said the truck, driven by Arthur R. Anderson, 54, of Lacey Spring had just started moving after the traffic light turned green at Orange Avenue and King Street Northeast. The car, driven by Keeling, approached the truck from behind in the same lane.
Keeling apparently misjudged the truck's speed, Slusher said. He steered to the left, but the car clipped the trailer as it passed.
Anderson was not injured.
Slusher said the men were wearing seat belts. No charges had been filed, but the investigation continues.
