BENEFIT SCHEDULED FOR INDIAN LEADER

A coffeehouse-style gathering this weekend at Roanoke College will benefit imprisoned American Indian leader Leonard Peltier.

The 8 p.m. performance Friday in the Roanoke College Student Center Ballroom will feature local musicians and poets, including the acoustic duo Wounded Bird. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted.

Peltier, a leader of the American Indian Movement in the 1970s, was convicted in 1977 in the killing of two FBI agents in South Dakota in 1975. His supporters argue that he is innocent, and was convicted for political reasons. President Clinton is reportedly reviewing Peltier's case for executive clemency.

The local event coincides with the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee's Peltier Freedom Weekend, Saturday and Sunday in Washington, D.C.
