BLACKSBURG - Federal Communications Commission Chairman Reed Hundt will be the keynote speaker at "The Road to the Future: A Ninth District Telecommunications Conference" July 18 at Virginia Tech.
Congressman Rick Boucher (D, Abingdon), chairman of the House Science Subcommittee, will sponsor the gathering at Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center. He'll be assisted by Virginia Tech, the Blacksburg Electronic Village, the Town of Blacksburg and The Center for Wireless Technology.
Boucher and U.S. Sen. Charles Robb also will speak.
The registration deadline is July 13. The $25 fee includes lunch.

Town beautification
CHRISTIANSBURG - The people of Christiansburg are going to gather on the town square with spades and water cans this evening at 6 to plant hundreds of red geraniums throughout town. The event has been spearheaded by the Visual Enhancement Committee, and this effort marks the first phase of a long-range plan to beautify the town.
