THE TIPOFF

THE HUMAN FAMILY: Downtown Roanoke will reverberate Saturday with song, dance, storytelling and other activities during the Roanoke Times & World-News Local Color celebration.

The event will begin with a Parade of Flags through the downtown area at 9:30. Church Avenue will be the center of the day's pageantry. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature exhibits, a fashion show, foods and a car show with entries from around the world. Admission is free.

LUSH: Members of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will accompany the Moody Blues when they perform Wednesday night at 7:30 at the Roanoke Civic Center Coliseum. Tickets are $25 and are available at the box office and Ticketmaster outlets.

MUSCLE UP: Country singer Aaron Tippin and guest Mike Henderson will play at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium Saturday night at 8. Tickets are $19.50, $18.50 and $17.50. The box office number is 981-1201.

GET READY: ``Hello Dolly!'', the Broadway play that Carol Channing made her own, opens tonight at 8 at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke's Center in the Square. The story of Dolly Gallagher Levi, matchmaker extraordinaire, has familiar songs and a wacky air about it. It will continue through July 17.

Show times are 7:30 Tuesdays through Thursdays and on Sundays, 8 on Fridays and Saturdays and the matinees are at 2 each Saturday and Sunday.

WILD AND WOOLLY: Limpopo, a four-member Russian band, will bring its ``crazy folk & roll'' to Lime Kiln Arts near Lexington for a concert Sunday night at 8. They offer jazzed-up versions of Russian folk songs and unique interpretations of American songs like ``Twist and Shout.'' Tickets are $12. Call 463-3074.

JUNK IN A TRUNK: That's how the comedian known as Carrot Top bills his latest series of performances. He has appeared on network talk shows and he'll appear tonight at 8 at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium. Tickets are $16.50.

MORE THEATER: Live Arts in Charlottesville is presenting a pair of one-act plays by Anton Chekhov. ``The Marriage Proposal'' and ``Swan Song'' will run through July 2. Tickets are $5 and $7 and are available at the door, among other places.

nThe Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre at Ferrum College will present Agatha Christie's ``Mousetrap'' for the final time Saturday night, with dinner starting at 6. For information and reservations, call 365-4335.

nThe Heritage Repertory Theatre in Charlottesville opens its season in Helms and Culbreth Theatres with a rotating schedule of plays that includes ``Steel Magnolias'' tonight, Saturday and Monday nights, ``Side by Side by Sondheim'' on Monday through July 6 and ``The Glass Menagerie'' on Thursday through Sunday. The season will continue through August 13. Other works to be presented are ``The Good Doctor,'' ``I Hate Hamlet'' and ``Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.''

n``A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum'' is the presentation under way at the Greenbrier Valley Theatre in Lewisburg, W.Va. It will continue tonight and Saturday night and Wednesday through July 2. Weekday performances are $10 for adults and $9 for seniors and students. Friday and Saturday shows cost $11 and $10. DOBRO MAN: Sugar Hill recording artist Jerry Douglas will perform tonight at 8 at the old Narrows High School in Narrows. He'll be helped by Russ Barenberg, Edgar Meyer, Dylan Locke, Craig Willoughby, Bob Thomas and Jack Chang during the evening of rural-flavored music. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. PRETTY, GROOVY: Jem Moore and Ariane Lydon and No Strings Attached will play music Sunday night at 7:30 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Roanoke. Moore and Lydon mix folk, jazz and a certain classical feeling in their songs. No Strings is a well-known, longtime contributor to the area's music scene. The concert is billed as an Album Release Concert. Admission is $5.
