ROCKY ROAD TO THE TOP

Wanted: Chief executive officer to head ice cream company with social values. Experience in international marketing or franchising helpful. Commitment to community-focused culture a must.

If you want the job heading up Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc. ice cream company, and your credentials fit the bill, don't send a resume. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are asking CEO wanna-bes to send, instead, an essay of up to 100 words telling ``Why I would be a great CEO for Ben & Jerry's.''

The search for someone to head up the business comes as Cohen decides to step down from the post at the Waterbury, Vt., company he helped found. ``This is a great opportunity for someone who cares about people, has the skills and vision to see around the corners of our future business development and has always wanted to wear jeans to work,'' Cohen told the Wall Street Journal. While he won't be the CEO any longer, Cohen will stick around to work on the ``fun stuff - product development and promotion.''

Whoever becomes the new CEO probably won't miss the salary cap limiting executive pay to seven times that of the lowest paid full-time worker. But, cut-throat billionaire executives will have to match their salary with a ``gentleness of spirit'' listed as a requirement for the job. In fact, says Cohen, ``The person who fills this position will have a very strong committment to the social mission.''

We just hope they don't change the packaging - we're kinda partial to Ben's and Jerry's faces on our Cherry Garcia.
