VALLEYDALE CALLS LAYOFFS ROUTINE

Valleydale Foods Inc. in Salem will lay off 30 to 35 second-shift workers from its bacon-slicing operations today, but the company's president said the furloughs should be temporary.

Lewis R. Little, president of Gwaltny of Smithfield Ltd. and Valleydale Foods units of Smithfield Foods Inc., said Thursday the layoffs are the result of too big an inventory of bacon.

"You do it with hot dogs in the winter," Little said of cutting back on production. "You do it with other things at other times."

He said the company would evaluate the situation week by week.
