AKERS, Effort Wayne Jr., 82, of 3035 Lee Highway, Pulaski, died Thursday afternoon, June 23, 1994, at the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Blacksburg, Va. on September 29, 1911, and was the son of the late Effort Wayne Akers Sr. and Alice Spradlin Akers. He was retired from Pulaski Furniture and was preceded in death by five brothers, Clinton, Fred, Earl, Robert and Guy Akers, and a sister, Virginia Cupp Bertha Woods. Surviving are his wife, Opal Phillips Akers, Pulaski; daughters and sons-in-law, Thelma Jean and Arnold Anderson, Jo Dot and Wilburn Venable, all of Pulaski; grandchildren and grandchildren-in-law, Debbie and Dean Mabry, Joey and Gloria Venable, all of Dublin; great-grandchildren, Danielle Venable, Tangie Mabry, both of Dublin, Sean Venable, Waterloo, S. C., and Eric Venable, Macon, Ga. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Matt Showalter officiating. BARNETT, Jacob M., 69, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, June 23, 1994 at the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was the son of the late Jacob and Alease Barnett. He is survived by a sister, Lethia Jones; a niece, Gloria Jones; a great-nephew, Andrea D. Jones, all of Roanoke; a devoted friends, Mozell Walton; one stepdaughter; two stepsons; stepgranddaughters; and stepgrandsons. A graveside service will be held Monday, June 27, 1994, 1 p.m. at the Lily of the Valley Church Cemetery with the Rev. Matthew Barnett officiating. BOSTON, Margeree Weddle, 76, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 24, 1994, in a Salem nursing home. She was the widow of John O. Boston and the daughter of the late Edgar M. and Effie Webber Weddle. She was a member of Grandin Court Baptist Church and retired from Southwestern Life Insurance Co. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Carl (Edna) Danner, Natural Bridge; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at the graveside, Evergreen Burial Park, 11 a.m., Monday, June 27, 1994, with Rev. Philip Motley officiating. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

BUCHANAN, Iva Parks, 68, of Marion, widow of Sam G. Buchanan, died Friday, June 24, 1994 in Camelot Hall, Richmond, Va. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Paul Robinson, Richmond; three sisters, Zenna Pennington, Marion, Charlotte Hoback, Sarasota, Fla., and Margaret Warren, Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Paul Craig Robinson, Margaret Anne Robinson, and Caroline Elizabeth Robinson. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 27, 1994 at 2 p.m. in the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Sheldon Sorge officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. CHAPMAN, Robert E. Lee, ""Ned"", 87, of Blacksburg, died Friday, June 24, 1994, in Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born April 15, 1907, to the late Ira Deyerle and Edna White Chapman. Mr. Chapman graduated from Salem High School and Roanoke College. He taught at Salem High School and then went on to teach mathematics at V.P.I. & S.U. for 37 years, from 1935 until 1972. ""Ned"" was a member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, the Blacksburg Country Club, and the Blacksburg Lions Club. Mr. Chapman was preceded in death in 1976 by his wife, Pearle Henderso n Chapman. Mr. Chapman is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: Nedlee and Michael Grant; two grandchildren: Sarah Beth and William Chapman Grant, all of Morgantown, W.Va.; four sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. Service will be held Monday, June 27, 1994, at 1:00 p.m., at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. The Rev. Herbert Hobbs will be officiating. Interment will be 3:00 p.m. in the Sherwood Burial Park, Salem, Va. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Blacksburg United Methodist, P.O. COLEMAN, Aylett Breckenridge III, of Boca Raton, Fla., passed away Wednesday, June 22, 1994, at his home, after a long illness. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Mary Kay Coleman; his mother, Anne Byrd Robinson; his daughter, Anne Meredith Coleman; son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ashby Walker Coleman. CONNER, Carmen Elizabeth, infant daughter of Jackie and Sheri Conner, of Brandon, Miss., died Friday, June 17, 1994. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Cameron Michael Conner; grandparents, Jack and Joyce Conner, Troutville, Hulon and Eva Williams, Brandon, Miss.; great-grandparents, James and Laura Thomas, Roanoke, Susie Conner, Roanoke, Bertha Hinson, Brandon, Miss. DOWDY, Margie Nichols, 90, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, June 23, 1994, in a local hospital. Mrs. Dowdy was a former member of Villa Heights Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a R. A. leader for many years. She was a member of Grandin Court Baptist Church, where she was a teacher and member of the Mary Martha Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eustace W. Dowdy; her daughter, Dorothy Anne Bible. Surviving are her son, E. Wallace Dowdy, Roanoke; her daughter, Jean Dowdy Equi, Roanoke; her sister, Mamie E. Nichols, Roanoke; her son-in-law, Richard G. Bible, Roanoke; five grandchildren, Danny, Mike, and Patrick Equi, David Bible, Margie Anne Hartman; six great-grandchildren, Holli Hartman, Courtney, Erica, Blair, Nicholas, and Brian Equi. Graveside services will be held in Fair View Cemetery, Monday, June 27, 11 a.m. with the Rev. J. Landon Maddex officiating. FURROW, William Albert, (``Jack''), 83, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 1994, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Florence Fuller Furrow, of 53 years; a sister, Nellie England, Michigan; brother, Joe Furrow, West Virginia; special friend and brother-in-law, Howard Fuller; father-in-law, Cruise Fuller; sister-in -law, June Massie; brothers-in-law, David Fuller, Ralph Fuller, Percy Fuller, Roanoke, Freddie Fuller, North Carolina. LINK, Fred Marvin Sr., 68, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, June 23, 1994 at the Elder Care Gardens Nursing Home in Charlottesville. Born in Rockbridge County on September 28, 1925, he was the son of the late Phillip Burton Link and Julia Bell Broughman Link. He was a retired supervisor with Reeves Brothers, a veteran of WWII, having served in the U. S. Navy and a member of the V. F. W. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Irene Secrist Link, and son, Fred M. Link Jr. Survivors include a brother, Richard Link of Missouri; a grandson, Kevin J. Link, Buena Vista; a granddaughter, Tina Ann Link, Buena Vista. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 1994 at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel. Witt Roberts. She was retired from the Rubatex Corporation. She is survived by many cousins and her special friends, Eddie Austin and N. A. SHUFFLEBARGER, Carlton Bruce, Sr., (""Murph""), 73, of Bastian, Va., died Thursday, June 23, 1994, in the Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Elizabeth Bruce Shufflebarger. He was a retired postmaster of the Bastian Post Office with 34 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Mutter Shufflebarger; two daughters and son-in-law, Renita Rasnake, Brenda and John Gibson all of Bastian, Va.; sons, Carlton Bruce Shufflebarge r Jr. of Springfield, Va.; two granddaughters, Denise Rasnake and Crystal Rasnake both of Bastian, Va.; two grandsons, Robert Gibson and Kyle Gibson both of Bastian, Va.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Zareda and Daniel Earnest of Bastian, Va., Alma Shufflebarger of Oakland City, Ind.; one uncle, Guy Bruce of Bastian, Va. and a special friend, Richard Harmon of Bastian, Va. SLOAN, Elva Bowling, of Roanoke, died Thursday, June 23, 1994 in Lewis Gale Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 1, 1912 in Franklin County the daughter of the late Thomas M. Bowling and Rosibet Spencer Bowling. Mrs. Sloan had lived most of her life in Roanoke where she was a retired Real Estate Broker. She was a graduate of Ferrum College where she received on May 1, 1994 the 1994 Benjamin M. Beckham Medallion for her support of Ferrum College's Blue Ridge Institute and Museums and the Raymond H. and Elva Bowling Sloan Endowed Scholarship Fund. She was an active member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church of Roanoke, where she had served on various church committees. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond H. Sloan. Funeral services will be held at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel on Saturday, June 25,1994 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Arthur E. Grant officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

SMITH, William Clevlian, 82, of Radford, died Thursday, June 23, 1994, in Radford Community Hospital. Born December 26, 1911, he was the son of the late William H. Smith and Zaide Wray. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Grose Smith. He was a member of First Penecostal Holiness Church of Radford. He was a retired employee of the Lynchburg Foundry Company in Radford. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Debra G. Saul, Radford; two sons, Leon R. Smith, McCoy; William Smith, Princeton, W.Va.; one brother, Houston P. Smith, Pulaski; one sister, Mrs. Stella Clark, Floyd. He is also survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 26, 1994, at 2 p.m. from the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Homer D. Sawyers officiating. THORNE, Russell Clinton Sr., 49, of 2967 Ridgeway Dr., Troutville, died Wednesday, June 22, 1994, in the Veterans Hospital in Salem. Born on November 21, 1944, in Matoaka, W.Va., he was the son of Henry and Mary Jones Thorne of Rt. 5, Box 415, Bluefield, W.Va. Mr. Thorne had been a resident of Troutville for 16 years and was a carpenter. He was a veteran of Viet Nam serving with the U.S. Army and was of the Protestant faith. Survivors include his parents, Henry and Mary Jones Thorne, Rt. 5, Bluefield, W.Va.; one son, Russell Thorne Jr., Stuart; four sisters, Ielene Saunders, Cape Charles, Hazel Wagner, Baltimore, Md., Connie Corns, Chesapeake, Deborah Keys, Rt. 3, Bluefield, W.Va.; one brother, Robert Thorne, Princeton, W.Va.; three grandchildren. WIMBERLEY, Jeralyn Ann, (``Jerrie''), of Roanoke, died Thursday, June 23, 1994. Surviving are her husband, Richard Wimberley; a daughter, Courtney Wimberley; mother, Phyllis Rainey, all of Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon Richard and Lennie Bruno, Alpharetta, Ga.; a nephew and wife, Chris and Jessica Bruno, Decatur, Ga.
