BLACKSBURG - Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library's Blacksburg branch is offering free public demonstrations and workshops relating to its Blacksburg Electronic Village service. Registration begins Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Blacksburg Area Library and continues until all spaces are filled. Children need to have a parent or guardian present to register.
Introductory Overviews will be offered July 14 and July 25 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Space is limited to 50 applicants for each session.
Gopher Workshops for adults will be offered July 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., July 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., July 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and July 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Space is limited to six applicants for each session.
Gopher Workshops for children will be offered July 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., July 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and July 31 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Space is limited to six applicants for each session.

Montgomery cannery
RINER - The Montgomery County cannery at Auburn High and Middle schools will open July 11 and operate Monday through Thursday until Aug. 26. It will remain open on Mondays and Wednesdays until Nov. 10.
There is a one-time membership fee of $5 and a processing fee of 15 cents per container. Apple butter will be processed for $1 per gallon. Safety regulations must be followed, and small children should not be brought to the cannery.

Research project
BLACKSBURG - A Virginia Tech study needs fourth- or fifth- grade learning-disabled students from Montgomery County to participate in a project investigating the effects of mainstreaming on children's feelings.
Each child will be interviewed for about 30 minutes and will receive free food from Burger King. All individual information obtained in the study will be kept confidential.

Red Cross meeting
CHRISTIANSBURG - The annual Red Cross meeting will be held on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, 107 W. Main St. For information about the Red Cross or the meeting, call 382-2361.
Waste-disposal hours
CHRISTIANSBURG - Summer hours at the waste disposal center on Prices Fork Road just south of the elementary school are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Sunday, noon-8 p.m. Garbage delivered to the center must be bagged household trash from residents of Montgomery County, Blacksburg or Christiansburg.
Materials accepted for recycling include glass, aluminum, steel food cans, newspaper, mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, motor oil, antifreeze, automobile batteries and household appliances.
Number one and two type plastics may also be deposited for recycling. The number one plastic is primarily soda bottles. Number two is found in detergent and milk containers. Look on your plastic containers for a triangle of arrows with a number in the middle. If the number is one or two, the plastic can be recycled through the waste disposal center.
An attendant is on duty at the Prices Fork center during all hours of operation to assist the public.
More recycling containers have been placed at the green box site at the Elliston-Lafayette Industrial Park on Virginia 603, North Fork Road. In addition to numbers one and two plastic already accepted, clean, sorted glass; rinsed and flattened aluminum; and empty, steel cans may be delivered.

Cycling for charity
BLACKSBURG - Two Snyder Hunt employees from the firm's Wyndham community in Richmond plan to pedal their way to a regional manager's meeting Sunday at the company's Hethwood headquarters.
Dan Van Epp and Dan Schmidt - both avid sports cyclists - will make the 200-mile trek along secondary roads to benefit both their own fitness and charity, in this case Habitat for Humanity. They'll be taking pledges for each mile they cover.
The pair will set off from Richmond around 4. a.m. Saturday and hopes to spend the night in Lynchburg. They'll complete the trip Sunday.
