PATRICIA EDWARDS IS TECH'S NEW ARCHITECTURE DEAN

Patricia K. Edwards, interim dean of Virginia Tech's College of Architecture and Urban Studies for over a year, has been awarded the permanent job.

"Dean Edwards will provide stability and continuity at a critical time in the life of the university and the college," Provost Fred Carlisle said in a statement.

"As a leader, Dr. Edwards is informed, considerate, firm, decisive and thoughtful."

Edwards came to Tech in 1974 as an assistant professor. In 1980, she became chair of the graduate urban affairs program, and became assistant dean for research administration from 1989 to 1993.

She has been a visiting research scientist for the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization in Australia, and worked with the United States Information Agency's exchange program with the Hungarian Academy of Science.

According to a university release, Edwards has been principal investigator or co-investigator on 37 national and international projects, written numerous articles, is founder of the Journal of Urban Affairs, and is co-editor of the Series in Urban Public Policy.

Edwards earned her master's and doctorate in sociology from Virginia Tech, and holds an undergraduate degree in music education from the State University of New York at Potsdam.

She and Peggy Maszaros, dean of the College of Human Resources, are Tech's only woman deans.
