Perot gets slap from panel

WASHINGTON - The Federal Election Commission scolded Ross Perot's 1992 presidential campaign for violating campaign finance laws, but decided against taking any further action, officials said Friday.

The FEC sent two letters of admonishment to Perot campaign officials outlining the violations and asking them to ``take steps to ensure that this activity does not occur in the future.''

The letters were released Friday.

The FEC said the Perot campaign broke the law when it accepted excessive contributions, failed to reimburse campaign workers for some expenses, failed to disclose disputed debts and failed to report some financial activities.

Md. killing linked to serial murders

Montgomery County, Md., police have linked the strangling death of a gay man to the suspected serial killer of at least four other gay victims in Florida and Georgia, officials said Thursday.

Homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant late Wednesday for Gary Ray Bowles, 32, a transient construction worker wanted in connection with the murder of David A. Jarman.

The body of Jarman, a loan processor who police said was openly gay, was found April 14 in his Wheaton, Md., apartment.

Law enforcement agencies along the East Coast have been searching for Bowles since the FBI identified him as a serial murder suspect two weeks ago and obtained a warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Jim Hardee, an assistant state attorney in Jacksonville, Fla., said investigators from several jurisdictions have met with the FBI and believe Bowles could be linked to the slayings of six or more gay men.
