BLACKWELL, Leonard Harry, 83, of Buena Vista, died Saturday, June 25, 1994, at his residence. Born in Buena Vista on March 5, 1911, he was the son of the late John Henry Blackwell and Ruby Slagle Blackwell Thorne. He was a self-employed plumber and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of First Brethren Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ware Blackwell. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and C. L. Burch, Lexington; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Judy and Sammy Kessinger; great-granddaughters, Brittany, Amanda, and Morgan Kessinger, all of Buena Vista; sister, Thelma Blackwell Downey, Buena Vista; stepbrother, Saylor Thorne, Waynesboro. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, June 27, 1994, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lester Kennedy and Rev. Jesse Truax officiating. In terment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. FARMER, Betty Lee Robertson, 85, of Vinton, died Thursday, June 23, 1994. She was a member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church. FERGUSON, Carrie Richardson, 94, of Roanoke County, died Tuesday, June 14, 1994, at her residence. Mrs. Ferguson was the widow of Hiram B. Ferguson. She was born February 1, 1900, in Grandview, W.Va. She has been a resident of Roanoke and Roanoke County since 1913. Mrs. Ferguson was a member of First Christian Church, the Daughter of the Confederacy and Wasena Garden Club. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jack Bernard and Lois Ferguson, Roanoke County, Thomas Riley and Eva Ferguson, Dallas, Texas, Wiliam Edward and Rena Ferguson, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Audie Mitchell, Slidell, La.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 12 noon Monday, June 27 at First Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Rivers officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.

HENSLEY, Johnny Lee, 46, of Moneta, died Friday, June 24, 1994, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hensley was born December 24, 1947, the son of the late Herschel and Mary Hensley. He was part owner of John's Outrigger Restaurant in Moneta. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Hensley, of the home; one daughter, Kelley Hensley, Moneta; one son, John Lee Hensley, Moneta; one sister, Connie Kisasonak, Moneta; several nieces and nephews. KISH, Rev. Frank G., 76, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 24, 1994 at a local hospital. Rev. Kish served pastorates in Burnham, Penn., Annapolis, Md., Cumberland, Md., Oxon Hill, Md., Lynn, Mass., Topeka, Kan., and Roanoke, Va. where he served as minister of visitation at First Church of the Nazarene until his retirement in 1992. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor A. Kish; four daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn Zinn of Denison, Kan., Rev. Verne and Judith Haskell of Skowhegan, Maine, Larry and Karen Moser of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Jack and Marjorie Ligon of Phoenix, Ariz., Dennis DeRosa of Phoenix, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; brother, Stephen Kish; sister, Marion Rich; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at the First Ch urch of the Nazarene 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Earl Robertson and the Rev. Randy Ledsome officiating. Interment will be in the Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. MOUNTCASTLE, Shirley Ann Jeffries, 50, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, June 24, 1994. Formerly of Franklin County, she went home to be with the Lord after a long illness. Born in Springfield, Mass., April 26, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Cebert and Evelyn Jeffries. She was a member of Halesford Baptist Church, where she loved her work with children and sang in the choir. She was a faithful Vacation Bible School teacher for 21 years. She was also a former Girl Scout leader, school volunteer, and a member of the Franklin County Library Board of Trustees. Surviving are her husband, Douglas M. Mountcastle; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey A. and C rystal L. Housman, Wirtz; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy A. and Kerry T. Cassell, Charlotte, N.C., Christy C. and Ronald R. Pinson Jr., Roanoke; grandchildren, Shanna N. and Tyler C. Housman, Kelsey J. and Ronald R. Pinson III. THOMPSON, Samuel James Jr., (``Jimmy""), 58, of 425 Trents Ferry Rd., Lynchburg, died Friday, June 24, 1994, after a short illness. He was the husband of Sandra Cox Thompson. Born in Campbell Co., he was a son of the late Samuel James Thompson Sr. and Laura Watkins Thompson. An outstanding trial lawyer, Mr. Thompson was educated in the Campbell Co. school system and attended Washington and Lee University from which he received his bachelor of arts and legal degrees, the later in 1959. While at Washington and Lee, he received many awards and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of the Coif. Upon graduating from Washington and Lee at the top of his class, he became associated with the Lynchburg law firm Caskie, Frost, Davidson, and Watts, now Caskie and Frost, and was a principal of the firm at the time of his death. He was active in and a former board member of the Virginia Association of Defence Attorneys and was president of Virginia's Western District of the American Board of Trail Advocates. In addition, he was very active in the Virginia Trail Lawyers Association and the International Association of Defence Council. He was also a member of the American Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, and the Lynchburg Bar Association of which he was a former president. Mr. Thompson was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Jefferson National Bank (a predecessor of NationsBank in Lynchburg). He had been an officer and member of the Board of Directors of Oakwood Country Club and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Lynchburg. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Martha McCorkle Thompson, Suzanne Lantham Thompson, Samuel James Thompson III, all of Lynchburg, Stephanie Hubbard Wade, Richmond, Suzanne Lauren Hubbard, Lynchburg; two brothers, Dr. Stephen Lee Thompson, Rustburg, Maj. Robert Anderson Thompson, Palm Dale, Calif.; one sister, Elizabeth Thompson Hoback, Roanoke; an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Lee Watkins, Rustburg; three nieces; three nephews; three grandnieces. A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, Lynchburg.
