CHAUTAUQUA WRITING WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Twenty-nine writers received awards in this year's Wytheville Chautauqua Festival Writing Contest.

Adult essay winners were Deborah Baker, Christiansburg, first place; Ann Laing, Wytheville, second; Mary Lois Lanier, Radford, third; and Magdalena Bland, Virginia Beach, honorable mention.

First place in adult poetry went to Dahna Lineberry, Hillsville. B.R. Culbertson of Blacksburg was second and Amy M. Wright, Wytheville, third.

Adult short story winners, in order, were Patricia M. Armstrong, Blacksburg; Anitta J. Roberts, Independence; and Ralph S. Coleman, Wytheville. C.R. Crackel of Clifton Forge won honorable mention.

High school essay winners, in order, were Diana Cassell, Stacie Kramer and Matthew Pugh, all Wytheville.

High school poetry: Jaime Sullivan, Max Meadows; Amber Akers, Max Meadows; Sarah Wilson, Crockett.

High school short story: Kelly Ann Creger, Chris Umberger, Ian Fiorini, all of Wytheville.

Grade 6-9 essay: Tracy Hammack, Rural Retreat; Amy Newton, Rural Retreat; Heather Patton, Draper.

Grade 6-9 poetry: Andrea Crigger, Rural Retreat; Keisha Dunford, Rural Retreat; Shai Huffard, Crockett.

Grade 6-9 short story: Tara M. Hancock, Pulaski; Deanna Leigh Coon, Bluefield, W.Va.; Jason Griffith, Independence.

The awards were presented Friday during a program featuring readings by Tennessee writer and poet Harry Dean.

Contest judges this year included Parks Lanier and Warren Self from Radford University; Larry Richman, Virginia Highlands Community College; Bonnie Wynn and Elaine Scott, New River Community College; Martha Vaught, Rhonda Catron and Bobby Wymer, Wytheville Community College; and John Willis, Richlands.
