JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS HEADLINE MUSICAL PERFORMERS

The big musical headliner for the Salem Fair this year will be Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, with Dennis DeYoung, Atlantic Starr and Joshua Kadison as back-up bands.

On Sunday, July 3, starting at 1 p.m. in the Salem Stadium, these performances are all free and open to the public. K92 radio station is sponsoring this year's show.

Joan Jett has recently been heard of, not in album form, but in "Wayne's World II." However, she is working on a new CD project entitled "Pure and Simple," which should be hitting the record stores this summer. Jett is probably best known for her hit, "I love Rock-N-Roll." She has also starred in the movie, "Light of Day" with Michael J. Fox.

Dennis DeYoung of Styx also has been working on his music, and is soon to release a solo, "Ten on Broadway." He recently starred in the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar," playing the role of Pontius Pilot. He has been singing both with Styx and solo, and has released such hits as "Babe," "The Best of Time" and "Show Me The Way."

Joshua Kadison's debut album, "Painted Desert Serenade," is poetic music that has been described as getting "inside our imagination . . . the kind of songs that touch without bruising, affect without being affected; that leave a groundswell of emotion long after hearing." Kadison said his early musical influences include such greats as Cole Porter, Rogers & Hart and Gershwin. "The first record I ever bought was `Rhapsody in Blue,' " he said.

All songs on his album were composed within the last two years, and are derived from real stories, he said.

Atlantic Starr are established pop and r&b musicians who have released a new album that includes four cuts they produced themselves. The Lewis brothers, David, Wayne and Jonathan, who form the nucleus of Atlantic Starr, along with female vocalist Aisha Tanner, wrote a total of six songs in all for the album, and worked with Vassal Benford on four tracks, and Guy Roche on two other songs.

They believe in "positive love songs to counter the sexism so pervasive in music these days," said Wayne Lewis. He says his lyrics "attest that women and men can be friends with each other again."

Atlantic Starr began as a nine-person team based in White Plains, N.Y., signing with A&M Records in 1978. They recorded six albums for that label before switching to Arista Records.
