ROANOKE GOLFER WINS JUNIOR TOURNEY

Lee Taylor of Roanoke won the 11- and 12-year-old boys division of the 11th annual Mid-Pines Junior Invitational golf tournament Sunday in Southern Pines, N.C.

Taylor birdied two of the last four holes to complete a round of 4-over-par 76 on the Mid-Pines Resort course. His first-round score of 78 gave him a 154 total and a three-stroke victory.

Also in the region:

Chad Hodges, the winner of the Rookie division, was disqualified after Saturday night's races at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway.

Hodges' disqualification gave Mike Roberts of Roanoke the victory.

In races that ended too late for Sunday's editions of this newspaper: Red Hartman won the Pure Stock division, followed by Mike Owens and Ashley Wimmer; and Tommy Hall finished first in the Any Car event, with Jeff Howery second and Jimmy Floyd third.

The Salem Suns defeated the Gunslingers of Columbia, S.C., 8-7 in an American Softball Association Class C fast-pitch softball tournament Sunday in Spartanburg, S.C.

The victory qualifies Salem for the national tournament in September in Midland, Texas. Salem's David Light was chosen MVP after he went 3-for-4, scored three runs and knocked in four Sunday.
