SPIRITS OVERCOME RAIN, BUCCANEERS

Winston-Salem rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning Sunday to defeat Salem 10-8 in a Carolina League baseball game at Municipal Field.

Salem blew leads of 5-2 and 8-3 in the game, which was interrupted by two rain delays totaling 2 hours, 40 minutes.

Winston-Salem's Cleveland Ladell tied the game in the ninth inning with a bases loaded two-run single, and left fielder Mike Meggers plated the decisive runs with a two-run double off Salem closer Sean Evans (1-5).

The Buccaneers took a 5-2 lead in the second inning, getting three runs on Mitch House's home run. He was the third Salem batter after play resumed following a rain delay of 2:04.

His homer followed singles by Danny Clyburn and Jon Farrell. Chance Sanford's run-producing single and Jake Austin's sacrifice fly accounted for the other two Salem runs in the inning.

Winston-Salem reliever Chad Conners (1-1) pitched a perfect eighth inning to get the victory. Ricky Pickett allowed one runner in the Salem ninth, but picked up his first save.
