Upward Bound
BLACKSBURG - Approximately 100 high school students from Southwest and Central Virginia will take part in Project Upward Bound at Virginia Tech this summer.
The program is designed to motivate students to work up to their potential and attend college by offering additional academic preparation and a chance to attend various cultural events.
During the regular school year, students travel to Virginia Tech every other Saturday to take classes and attend concerts, plays and sporting events. During the summer, they live on campus and take six courses, including English, mathematics and science. They also participate in workshops and athletic events, produce a talent show, attend theater presentations and visit other college campuses.
Project Upward Bound is funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant and is sponsored by the Virginia Tech Department of Sociology.
For more information, call Upward Bound at 231-6911.
Tech student loans
BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech has been picked to participate in the Federal Direct Student Loan program, starting with the 1995-96 academic year. Under the program, approved by Congress last year, the federal government provides loans directly to students through the school itself - eliminating any intermediary agencies or banks and reducing costs.
The program also offers students a repayment option that tailors monthly payments to the borrower's income.
A low loan default rate - just 2 percent on fiscal year 1990-91 - was one of the factors that led to Virginia Tech's selection by the U.S. Department of Education as one of 983 participating schools. Just over 100 schools will participate in the program's first academic year program.
