ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Passenger boardings at Roanoke Regional Airport showed a healthy increase last month. The airport commission reported that 36,487 people boarded there in May, up 12.35 percent from 32,476 in April, and up 20.4 percent from 30,304 a year ago.

So far this year, the airport has seen 141,517 boarding passengers, up 13.03 percent from last year's 125,198.

Airport marketing manager Mark Courtney said recent lower fares, especially on USAir, "certainly have stimulated demand." USAir is responding to the new Cal Lite program of reduced fares and service on Continental Airlines out of Greensboro and other regional airports.
